Floor cushions are trendy right now. It might seem like an odd choice, but they can add a touch of comfort and alternative seating options to your home. It also helps you handle additional party guests without needing to break out new furniture.
You’re going to find a number of options out there, of course. However, sometimes these can be a bit more expensive than you’d like. Or perhaps you’d prefer to have a more personal touch for your floor cushions Australia.
If you’re in the latter category, let Sew Covered help you out. Here’s a quick look at how these cushions are made!
First, we’ll go over what you need for this project.
Naturally, a sewing machine and scissors will be involved. You’ll also need enough fabric to cover the cushions themselves. A strip of the same fabric or a contrasting one is also required. Cording is also needed, whether store-bought or DIY. Finally, some filling for stuffing the cushion itself.
If you have something already made, you can skip that last requirement.
Now, let’s begin by cutting two circles out of the fabric. You should probably use a pattern from an existing cushion to make this process simpler. If you don’t, you’ll have to dig up a compass and begin drawing a circle of a suitable size.
Use the welt cord to line around the edges of the circle, on the side that you want to be on display. Line up the rough edges of the welt with the edges of the circle, to make sure things are in alignment.
Use a few pins to keep the edges in place.
The sewing machine then comes into play. Sew the welt cord to the circle, going all the way around. Take the strip of fabric and put it on the “wrong” side, and pin it all the way around the “right” side. Remember to line up the edges.
Carry the new section to the machine and sew all around. Stay close to the edge. Sewing too far away will make a gap at the end that’s rather unseemly.
Then, turn the partially-complete project inside out and line up the edges to the outer circle. Pin them together and sew around once more. However, don’t sew all the way this time. Leave an opening so you can slip the cushion into the cover.
You can choose to sew the opening shut. Or you can leave it open if the filling inside is foam or something that won’t spill out.
